“Why are you studying abroad?” “Why Tallinn?” “Aren’t you scared?”
Why am I choosing to study abroad?
These above questions are all things I have been asked over the past several months and year as I have planned my trip. I believe studying abroad is the most successful way to learn. When studying abroad, you learn to see the world through someone else’s eyes; you learn how to communicate with people you would have never crossed paths with; you learn how to build friendships that will last throughout your lifetime; and on top of all of that, you gain so many positive experiences. Leaving the comfort of my hometown and good friends has been a challenge, but the benefits are worth it. It’s only a couple of months, right?
Why did I choose Tallinn?
Tallinn, Estonia is one of the best kept secrets in Europe. I had never thought about studying abroad in Estonia until the opportunity was presented to me. Having lived and traveled extensively in Germany and the rest of Western Europe, I wanted something different. Estonia is currently off the beaten path of tourism, but that is quickly changing. Come here for yourself to find out more.
I have chosen to study abroad at the Tallinn University of Technology (TTÜ) for many reasons. Keep reading for more information about TalTech.
Am I scared?
Of course I am scared, but isn’t that part of the adventure? I am stepping outside of everything I know in the United States to see the corners of the world I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. Living in Eastern Europe and coming from Cedar City, UT will push me in ways I can’t possibly yet fathom.

TALLINNA TEHNIKAÜLIKOOL
TALLINN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY: Estonia’s most innovative university.
Don’t let the technology included in the Univeristy’s name scare you off. I didn’t categorize studying Economics and Political Science as technical—but Estonians do things a little bit differently. You won’t find creative writing or drawing courses here; however, if you’re studying any field in Computer Technology, Science, Business, or Governance then you’ll fit in perfectly.
Since most of the courses at Tallinna Tehnikaülikool (TTÜ) are taught in English, the school’s population pulls from Estonia and all over the world. An international atmosphere has emerged at TTÜ with diversity at the core. I have met three Estonians in ALL of my classes & ONLY two fellow Americans. This diversity provides the classroom with a powerful opportunity to thrive. Since the beginning of school, I have engaged in meaningful conversations with individuals that I could not have otherwise come in contact with.
Since the winters here are brutal, the tunnels connecting all the buildings are a nice bonus.
Go TalTech!
